NSA planned to hack the Google Play to infect smartphones … – Exame Informática

It is the latest chapter in the new roster present in documents released by Edward Snowden:. NSA planned to make hacking the Google Play to infect millions of Android smartphones with spyware

According to The Intercept , the project had the code name ‘Irritant Horn’ and the spyware was intended to collect data terminals and send them to the NSA without users realizing. That is, would function as a man-in-the middle attack, which basically is a process where the cybercriminal infiltrates in the middle of the link between the server and the user to install spyware program.

However, the NSA was not alone in this project, as its counterpart agencies in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand also were preparing to do the same.

The method behind Irritant Horn not is a novelty, since, in 2011, the NSA had identified a flaw in UC Browser – a popular app in China and India – and instead of transmitting to the Alibaba (responsible for its creation), continued to seek ways to reach the app stores and Android mobile phones.

Remember also that the GCHQ, the British counterpart of the NSA, came to develop tools to attack Android and iOS smartphones. Baptized with the name of the Smurfs characters (or Estrunfes), these tools allow the agency to determine the location of a device with high precision, turn it on if he was off and turn on the microphone without the user noticing.
