One of the great new features unveiled at Google I / O 2014 was the line of basic smartphones Android One. Instead of bringing a new smartphone model, the company kicked off in a project to encourage manufacturers to develop low-cost Android smartphones. The search giant has the task of helping manufacturers providing role models for hardware construction at the time of development of new products. Thus, firms can launch innovations with features and attractive prices for consumers in emerging markets.
Not only that, but the project also focuses on the software where each has to offer pure Android, the same found in Nexus, with automatic updates of firmware and Google Play Services. When the brand uses the software experience of Android One and hardware suggested by Google, it ceases to spend on software, since the default experience is ready. So, everything is focused on having a great experience designed by the Mountain View giant, but bringing maximum fuel economy.
The idea really looks interesting on paper, but the Android One line is not selling as well Google expected. The manufacturers who joined the project are also not satisfied with the “restraints” imposed by the creator of Android. As a result, Google can go back, remove some requirements, and give more freedom to create for those interested in the project. Result? We can wait for a wider variety of hardware, not just something extremely basic with reduced price.
To give greater freedom to choose the hardware really is a change positive for the line Android One. Since each manufacturer can offer a product with higher differential and not only follow a common formula that is offered by several manufacturers. But does that will disrupt the ‘pure’ experience of Android and its fast and guaranteed updates? Google did not actually release a report with all the changes that will be allowed, but we can imagine that Google will not let Android One line turn a zone as with the Androids in the market, interfaces so modified that often do not realize that the system the little robot is there behind.
As expected, the novelty will start in India, as a relaunch of One series Android, but Google may take the news to other markets soon. Does offering a differentiated hardware, but keeping the promise of Android updates faster the company can finally stand out in the segment?
