The BlackBerry, which practically disappeared from the consumer market, announced it will launch a mobile phone with Android, abandoning the strategy of having only its own operating system and adopting the most popular system for mobile phones worldwide. The device will also have a physical keyboard, the BlackBerry brand image.

The company’s plans had already been reported, but official confirmation arrived only on Friday, to accompany the presentation of quarterly results. “Today we confirm our plans to launch Priv, an Android device that receives the BlackBerry Heritage name and core mission of protecting the privacy of our customers,” said CEO, John Chen. “The Priv combines the best safety and productivity BlackBerrt with the growing ecosystem of applications available on the Android platform.”

The new phone will have a keyboard that slides from the part back of the screen and was described by the company as a top-end machine. The BlackBerry also said he will not leave the operating system BlackBerry 10.

The company had revenues of $ 490 million in the three months ended August, 47% below 916 million same period last year. The net result improved from a loss of 207 million to profits of 51 million.

The Android operating system is the most widely used worldwide. Development is headed by Google and the platform is used by most manufacturers. The big exceptions are Apple and Microsoft, which have their own systems. The popularity of the iPhone puts the iOS away in a second. Microsoft’s market share is very small.

On Friday, the Reuters reported that US authorities are investigating the Android following practices on business complaints anticompetitive Google. The European Commission already has an ongoing investigation into the Android.
