Windows Phone. BlackBerry 10. Firefox OS. Sailfish. Tizen OS. None of these operating systems is relevant enough in the market for smartphones given that in the last quarter of last year Android and iOS accounted for 96.3% of smart phones shipped to retail.
The numbers are advanced by IDC and show a “choke” in the mobile device market. In a statement the same consultant says that Google and Apple software were close to the “total control” in the smartphone market.
The same percentage, 96.3%, also relates to the total of smartphones shipped to stores with iOS and Android throughout the year 2014, which further confirms the duopoly that currently exists in this segment market.
“What will require a more careful observation is how the two operating systems behave in 2015 and subsequent years. Now that Apple filed in the phablets market, there are few opportunities for the company to account. However, Samsung felt a strong stagnation in 2014, forcing the Android to rely more on small vendors to ensure large sales volumes, “said Ramon Llamas manager.
The IDC says there was not a fight for third place of the most popular operating systems, there was before “skirmishes” with Windows Phone to supplant BlackBerry 10 and competition.
And it will be between these two players one of the most interesting fights as Microsoft continues to strengthen its presence in low cost segment and the BlackBerry provides ship 10 million smartphones by having based on the new BB10 – which includes support for Android applications, for example through the Amazon Apps store.
