Face recognition system Android fails in 30% of cases - TeK.sapo

Apple integrated a fingerprint reader on the iPhone 5s, a system that should raise levels of security and simplify mobile actions that require user authorization. But according to an analysis of security firm Kaspersky, biometric verification systems are fallible.

The facial recognition for unlocking mobile phones, Android smartphones already present in several months ago, has an error rate ranging between 30 and 40%. External factors as the brightness level or the vibration of the device are sufficient grounds for the systems present an error rate higher than expected.

In the case of the Android operating system at launch was the release for recognition Facial reports that a photograph of the user enough to unlock the phone.

The accuracy of these verification systems turns out to be a major obstacle to its more widespread. Perhaps for this reason is that the fingerprint readers in laptops never said.

In a statement Kaspersky never speaks in specific faults that have been exploited in Touch ID iPhone. It also does not provide statistics on the error rate of the player from Apple. But if the reports that appeared shortly after the arrival of the new iPhone are correct, then German researchers needed only two days to get around the fingerprint reader Apple’s smartphone.

The Russian security firm says that “well-developed biometric techniques need tools too complex and have a very high cost.”

Another type of biometric system is voice recognition, which for Russian specialists can be easily manipulated. In 17% of cases it is possible to circumvent this type of verification method.
