Originally, the application was developed for the Galaxy Nexus, but should run on other devices using Android 4.0 or higher. In our tests, we used a Mini with CyanogenMod Galaxy S4 10.1 (Android 4.2).

Preparing the appliance

The process is very simple: just download Ultimate Backup Tool on Windows and connect your smartphone to your PC. Remember to have the drivers installed for the process to be held device. The program does not require installation.

You also need to enable the debug mode cell. For this, the option of developer should be visible in the settings menu. If not, tap “About Device” and then tap repeatedly on “Version number” until the unit informing that “you are a developer.”

Then return the Settings menu and click on “Developer Options”. Look for the “USB Debugging” option and tap the box next to activate it. Finally, you must enter a password backup to the desktop. Search for “local backup password” in the same menu and set a password.

Click “Back up my data” (or “Back up my data”) to start and wait for the procedure to be completed – something that can take a lot. You can also encrypt the contents of the backup by entering a password in the program, or leave blank for default password is used.

A small notification will appear on your smartphone screen when the process is complete. The backup file will be saved in the same folder where is the Ultimate Backup Tool on your computer with the name “backup.ab.”

Restoring a Backup

Restore a full backup is very simple: all you need to do is click “Restore” in the upper right corner of the screen. Again the program will require a permit on your smartphone to restore all data. Click “Restore my data” (or “Restore my data”) in your phone screen and wait for the procedure to be completed.

Backup with root

In this procedure, we will use Titanium Backup for such a task. However, for the program to work, it is necessary that the unit is rootado. The root is a kind of unlock smartphone, freeing you from the manufacturer of the official ROM. Because Android is an open system, this procedure is not illegal, but it can pose risks. So be careful.

Let’s start with the process to save all your data and applications. Once the program opens, you must click on the Backup / Restore tab located at the top of the screen.

Then click on your phone’s Menu button and select the “Batch actions” option within the “General” menu.

The program presents several backup options. Press the “Run” button next to “Backup all user apps + system data” to make a full backup. The following screen displays the applications which you can make a copy.

By default, all apps will be selected, but you can uncheck any of them. However, our goal is to create a copy of all, we recommend that you keep all options selected.

Then click the green signal “seen” in the far right corner of the screen. Thus, the backup will start. The process can be very time consuming depending on how many apps you have on your smartphone.

To ensure total security of your data, you can transfer the backup file to your computer. To do this, connect the data cable from your smartphone to your PC and search for “Titanium Backup” folder. Copy the file created inside Windows.

Maintaining backups

Once the first backup is done, you probably will not want to do the whole process again. What you need to do is just backup the apps that have been updated or newly installed. Simply choose the “Backup new user apps & newer versions” option within the “Batch actions” menu.

Scheduled backups

Make backups regularly can be a difficult task to be remembered. So Titanium Backup has an option scheduled backup, you can program to be conducted at an interval of one week, one month or any other period.

To schedule your backups, you must tap the “Schedules” tab in the upper right corner of the screen. Two options are presented: The first is called “Redo backups for modified data”, which allows backups only data that has changed

The second option, and probably the most important, will back up all new applications, data and system updates made since the previous backup. In both options you can click “Edit” to define when and with what frequency the backup will be performed. To enable the feature, tap “Run”.

Restore Backup

Backup Android is important, keeping your device protected from collapse. But more importantly is able to restore your apps and settings in case something goes wrong.

Titanium Backup offers several options for you to make it through the “Batch actions” menu. The first, “Restore missing apps with data”, replace all the content that is missing on your device after the backup. “Restore all apps with data” will overwrite any existing application on previously created backup versions.

However, the most interesting option is the “Restore missing apps + all system data”, which will put everything in place when you created the backup. You can also restore individual applications through the home page “Backup / Restore” tab.

Creating a ZIP file recovery backup

While the “backup program and data” will protect your smartphone from most bugs, it will not have much use if the unit experiences a serious error that prevents it from starting correctly. This is where the backup recovery, since it can be restored without the need to start Android.

Via Titanium Backup

Make a backup in Titanium Backup recovery requires the purchase of the PRO version, which costs $ 5.99 dollars (£ 14). To run it, simply click on your phone’s Menu button and click “Batch actions”. Look for the “Recovery mode” and then tap “Create ‘update.zip’ from app + data backups.”

Via ROM Manager

Alternatively, you can use the ROM Manager app to do this backup for free. After installing the ROM Manager, you must install the Recovery partition to the part that can be used to update the system, data cleansing and data repair factory.

Recovery can be installed directly through ROM Manager itself, but select “Recovery Setup”.

Then tap “ClockworkMod Recovery”.

Look for your device in the list and then select the “flashing ClockworkMod Recovery” option. Wait until the end of the process.

However, it may be that your device is not compatible with this method. In this case, the process must be done manually. It is good to look for a specific tutorial of your device so that such action is possible and XDA Developers is full of them.

To create a backup file, open ROM Manager and click “Backup current ROM” (or “Backup Current ROM”).

Enter any name
