São Paulo – Of the 722 million smartphones sold globally last year, 66% were running Android, Google’s operating system, according to data from consultancy IDC and Gartner. “The trend is that Android continues to lead the market for the next five years,” said Bruno Freitas, research manager at IDC Brazil.
Of the more than 110 manufacturers who use the platform, mainly responsible for sales of Android is Samsung, with about 40% of the devices with this platform comericializados last year. “Samsung for not seeing its share grow, offering a wide range of smartphones low, medium and high cost,” said Tuong Nguyen, analyst at Gartner.
this competitive disadvantage, iOS, Apple, with only 19% of sales, does not hold even half of the market captured by Google. “The share of Android is expected to grow further over the next two years, also winning a market share of Blackberry,” Nguyen scored. This increasing participation further fuels rumors that Apple is even planning a “low-cost iPhone” in an attempt to change the game.
Morestill affected by the advance of Android, the Blackberry, fighting with OS BB7 and BB10, should see its global share of 5% down, especially in emerging markets. Nguyen believes the residents of Latin America will not be able to purchase these devices more expensive (so-called ‘high-end’). Or will not be willing to buy them with so many other options. In Brazil, which registered 16 million smartphones sold last year, the Blackberry represented 7% of sales, while iOS had 9.1% and Android with almost 73%.
AlreadyMicrosoft, Windows Phone has about 4% of the global share of this market. Driven by Nokia, it should gain share when spending being sold by other manufacturers, according to analysts.
Tablets – In the tablet market, Android with 41% share, has not yet overcome the iOS, with 56%, according to Gartner. The firm believes that by 2013, Android will lose more market on their iPad mini and tablets with Microsoft’s operating system.
IDC, however, does not share this expectation. The firm believes that Google’s platform also dominate this market this year, with Android reaching 46% share to 42% of iOS – a scenario that could last until 2017. “The iPad mini should ensure Apple a large volume of sales, but virtually every manufacturer running Android on their devices, which brings the expectation of change,” said Bruno Freitas, IDC Brazil.
Some still dispute the two predictions. Blackberry CEO, Thorsten Heins, made a controversial statement in late April. “In five years I see the Blackberry as the absolute leader in the mobile computing market,” said the executive, after claiming that tablets will expire in the next five years.
