The internet giant Google and its operating system, Android, confirmed its dominance in the smartphone market in the first quarter, while Microsoft’s Windows, won third place, behind Apple, according a study published on Thursday.
Android operating system, which is used by many manufacturers, including South Korea’s Samsung, was present in 3 out of 4 phones in the first quarter, which is exactly 75% of the market, according to estimates from the Office IDC research.
This increases the distance between its main rival, Apple American Group, which owns 17.3% of the market with its own operating system iOS used on the iPhone and iPad.
Microsoft, trying to regain lost ground with a mobile version more suited to your Windows system, to pass from fourth to third position, thanks to an increase in its market share from 2.6% to 3.2 % due to apparatus designed by Finnish company Nokia.
This made the pioneer manufacturer of smartphones, Canadian Blackberry, fell a gas (2.9% in the first quarter). IDC, however, revealed that the company managed to sell a million of its latest handsets, which have just been launched.
“The arrival of Windows Phone to the third position is a news and validates the direction taken by Microsoft and its key partner Nokia,” admits Kevin Restivo, IDC analyst.
“Since the volume generated relatively fragile, Windows should display other benefits to consolidate its status as an alternative to Android or iOS,” says Restivo.
