In August 2014 there were 18,796 different Android devices a significant jump in respect of 11,868 recorded in the same period last year. The numbers are the OpenSignal and show how Google is difficult to maintain cohesive operating system and all equipment in the latest version.
This is the current scenario – who want to see the infographic with better resolution and more interactively should refer to page OpenSignal:
thousands of different devices have been detected, the most 600 thousand analyzed during the study.
The Galaxy S3 remains the most popular of all Android device, showing the life cycle of smartphones may not be as short as manufacturers have been advocating. Samsung is incidentally the largest manufacturer of Android, accounting for 46% market share in terms of brands.
LG, Motorola, Huawei and Sony arise in the following positions.
But what happens with the Samsung also happens with the other major manufacturers: LG G2 is still the most popular model of the brand, as well as the HTC One M7 continues to have more total sales than One M8.
Among the equipment sold more prominent yet for the Google Nexus 5 and the Nokia X, who can stand out in the analysis of the fragmentation of equipment.
About the fragmentation of the operating system there is not much to add, since the numbers correspond to the values of OpenSignal recently revealed by Google.
As SlashGear explains, the numbers should however be analyzed with reservations – because the OpenSignal just compiled the data of the equipment which has an installed application. This means that the number of different Android devices can still be increased and that the problem of fragmentation is even more difficult to solve.
The issue of fragmentation ultimately undermine Google at the level of criticism he receives, but is worse for programmers who can hardly get through the vast audience that Android has. Already in other operating systems such as iOS, the greater cohesion between equipment simplifies the development of new apps.
On the other fragmentation ends by saying that there are too many people with a smartphone because of the diversified bet on low-end equipment, which normally does not come with software updates.
