Android market is fragmented into 19 000 devices and versions 7 … – Computerworld

Study OpenSignal shows a complex scenario, which gained 8000 new devices in a year. Samsung has 43% market share

The fragmentation of the ecosystem of devices using Android, Google’s mobile operating system has nearly doubled in size in a year. According to new study released by OpenSignal, the number of different devices using the OS jumped from 11 000 in 2013 to almost 19,000 in 2014.

Considered the Achilles heel of the platform to bring complexity to deal with so many devices and many different versions of the operating system, fragmentation is criticized by the competition – read Apple – and minimized by manufacturers that have adopted Android. And the study of OpenSignal, is much more complex than they imagined the two sides.

Android vs Apple

While in the Apple universe 91% of users are already using the latest version of operating system (iOS 7), 8% use iOS 6 and 1% use other, the Android universe scenario is distributed in 7 different versions of Google’s operating system, and the latest is installed in only one fifth of total devices.

According to the study, the Android 4.4 (Kit Kat) team 20.4% of all devices. The previous version of Android, named Jelly Bean, and its three variations, is 54.2% of devices – Jelly Bean 4.1 (26.5%); Bean Jelly 4.2 (19.8%) and 4.3 Bean Jelly (7.9%). In all versions of the OS released today, the oldest still in operation is the 2.2 (Froyo) in only 0.7% of devices. Then comes the 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) with 13.6%; and 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with 10.6%.

Samsung dominates

From the point of view of participation the brands , Samsung still dominates the Android market, and owns 43% market share (compared with 47% the previous year). Competing LG, Motorola, Sony, Lenovo and Huawei each of which has a similar market share (average 4.7%) leaving the rest for dozens of other brands.
